Gotham Gym has two locations in NY, I went to the gym in Soho but it can be easily confused with their other location on Washington (West Village) so make sure you double check this (I made the mistake of going to the wrong location, so just giving a heads up!). There are gloves and wraps available for rent, and assistance for the wraps if necessary. Right when you walk in you see a staircase leading down to boxing ring, dimmed lighting and inspirational quotes scattered on the brick walls.

I absolutely loved the feel of the gym and it was a good way to start off the class. However, in terms of the gym’s facilities there are no showers and the locker room consists of lockers and that’s it. There are single bathrooms down the hall.

The workout itself was 45 minutes starting with a pretty extensive warm up compared to most gyms. We did a series of dynamic movements really getting our heart rates up for the core of the workout. They also taught the 6 basic punches for the beginners. The entire class took place in the boxing ring (no use of punching bags), we partnered up and did pad work rotating back and forth the combos projected on the wall. There were two instructors which is definitely needed when teaching pad work to beginners. They demonstrated each combo and then passed it along to us. The only issue is that if you get partnered with someone who is not at the same skill level as you, you may not get the most efficient workout in. I was partnered with a beginner, so a lot of the time I was helping/correcting her.

HINT: bring a friend or someone you know that can work at your level.

Other than that the workout was good and we did a killer ab workout at the end. I would recommend grabbing a friend and checking out a class a Gotham, the studio alone made for a cool experience!
